Ouray, CO
September, 2002
Angela and I first drove through Ouray on our way back from climbing Prodigal Sun in Zion National Park. We'd heard of the town before, as it is well known for its ice climbing park, but it always seemed too far away from Omaha to warrant making a trip there in the winter. (Besides, how cool could a 'man-made' ice park really be?) But since we were already in the area, we thought we'd scope it out and see what this little mountain town was all about.
We were indeed
impressed! This little mountain town sits in the most amazing surroundings.
The hills and mountains bordering the town were quite colorful in late
September. The drive up to Ouray
from
Durango had simply been
incredible! We had to make numerous stops to snap pictures of
the awesome fall colors.
After spending a rainy night in a forest service
campground, we spent the morning taking in Ouray's
Victorian
quaintness before heading on to the Black Canyon. We drove past part of the canyon
where the Ice Park is located in the winter and tried to visualize the sides
draped with ice. It didn't take a great imagination to realize how cool
this place would be in the winter! The town certainly captured our
hearts, and we agreed that we needed to start planning right away for an Ouray
ice climbing trip!
In just four months we returned, and brought our friends with us...
