Angela and I made a solo trip to the Hills in July, 2003. We were
hoping to be able to visit Jarvis and Gina during this trip but they ended
up being away due to their duties with the National Guard. We arrived
in the Hills late at night, just as the Mount Rushmore fireworks were going
off. Needless to say, all the camping was full and we really just
wanted to get some sleep, so we parked at the Palmer Gulch trailhead and
just slept out under the stars. Throughout the night, distant
thunderstorms lit up the sky, but it remained dry where we were. We
were rudely awoke in the morning by the passing of a huge herd of cattle.
They were walking quite literally right past the ends of our sleeping bags
and mooing so loudly that it echoed tremendously through Palmer Gulch!
After laying motionless as a large bull passed near by, we quitely retreated
to the other side of this wooden fence in order to stay out of their way.
