For our first day in the Hills in May 2003, we headed to an area called
Middle Earth where all of the route names relate to Lord of the Rings by J.R.
Tolkien. This was a new area to us, and, much like our
first experience in the Rushmore
area, we had difficulty orientating ourselves. Using fuzzy logic
we convinced ourselves that this rock matched the description in the
guidebook for an area called 'Fanghorn Hills' and started up what we thought
was a 5.5. By the time I had reached the point I'm at in this photo I
realized that we were wrong. A few bolts had led to a run-out traverse
and steeper climbing past old pins. The climbing felt more like 5.8
than 5.5!
